Today I am 73 years old. In human terms, this is called ‘really old’. In a nation’s terms, this is the age of maturity. However, this nation wasn’t born 73 years ago. This nation can trace its roots to the beginning of human race, when the first human descended from heaven to the earth. Some call it the original sin but I call it destiny. So to rephrase what I said earlier, ‘today I am 73 years old as a country’.
You might ask that how can I trace my roots to the beginning of the human race? My answer to that is, the first human being was a Muslim and his message was of ‘peace for all’. This was the same message that the last Prophet (SAW) used to lay the foundations of the state of Madinah. The first but not the last of true Islamic State. A state where all humans, irrespective of their cast, colour or creed can live in harmony. Where the rights of minorities are protected, and there is an equal opportunity for all. The same message was delivered by the father of our nation when he addressed the first constituent assembly of Pakistan: ‘You are free to go to your temples; you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place of worship in this state of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or caste or creed that has nothing to do with the business of State.’
Today I am confused that why are my children so full of hate? Full of anger? I am embarrassed that today my own children feel proud when they leave me. Why? They say I have given them nothing. I wonder if they have even considered what they would be without me. Maybe it’s not I who is at fault, but my own children. If Adam’s son can be a murderer and Noah’s son can die a sinner, my children could also very much be at fault.
They ask what have I given to them? This makes me sad. How about the freedom to choose? The freedom to live? The freedom to roam around in my beautiful grass lands, mountains, deserts, rivers and sea? The freedom to get education? Need I go on? I did not make myself what I am today, because I had no control over it. I did not instill corruption. I didn’t spread hate. I didn’t elect corrupt leaders. I didn’t take advantage of my poor children. I don’t differentiate between my children based on their language, their culture, their religion, their cast or their color. It is actually you who started it, encouraged it, and used it for your own good. I am not intolerant, neither am I a racist or a bigot.
I am the land of the pure, for my sake, many of my children sacrificed all they had. You weren’t there when my sons where dying on the streets to reach me and my daughters were being abused, just because they wanted to live in peace. Today my own children want to divide me into pieces and fulfill the dreams of my enemies. O my children, thank the one true God who gave you a gift in the shape of a country where you are not a second-degree citizen. Where you are free to do whatever you want. If you don’t like what I am today, fix me. Perhaps it’s time that you gave something to me, rather than just taking whatever is left of me. I look forward for you to make me one of the greatest nations of the world.
